This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting with the development of cohesive, consistent and original copy for a range of communications and written materials. This position researches and collects information with the intent to understand specific client needs and the client’s vision for connecting with a target audience. This position will also perform editing, formatting and quality reviews to ensure consistency in written project communication materials.
What You'll Do:
Writes compelling, original and informative copy for a range of communications and outreach materials including speeches, fact sheets, presentations, reports, and press releases.
Proofreads and edits new and existing copy to ensure accurate, well-researched, and meets client needs.
Establishes and maintains brand voice and image for consistency in messaging.
Researches and understands the client's needs and target audiences, utilizing online searches, reviewing existing research, interviewing subject matter experts, and meeting in-person.
Leads collaboration with internal and external clients to understand content needs and proposes copy concepts in an engaging and persuasive way.
Interprets creative direction and approaches all projects with a creative eye and attention to detail.
Follows client-adopted style guides for developing and editing copy
Conducts high-quality research and fact checking online and in house, taking thorough notes.
Stays current on writing trends and materials produced by competitors.
Assists in other aspects of the creative or research processes to create cohesive, accurate content
May serve as a mentor to other copywriters in sharpening skills.
Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Creative Writing, Advertising, English, Journalism or related field and 6 years of relevant experience, or
In lieu of education 10 years of experience
What You'll Bring:
Works with communications and project staff to write, format and/or edit content for written materials such as technical reports, white papers, newsletters, guidelines, press releases, media kits, management plans and procurement documents.
Works closely with cross-functional teams, in a highly technical industry and organization, to gather information necessary for document development
Meets deadlines set by project teams including engineers, planners, communicators and environmental experts
Participates in the quality process for key client deliverables for engineering, planning and environmental documents, often serving as the final independent quality check
Creates straightforward, useful content for audiences with varying levels of knowledge on transportation
Producing and reviewing content for print and digital channels (e.g., social media, print, digital advertising, fact sheets) and reviewing content of less-experienced staff. Ensuring the content flow and messaging is consistent with the agency/client voice.
Making judgment calls to ensure documents meet style guide requirements.
Approving content before submitting, ensuring overall flow between copy and layout.
What We Prefer:
Exceptional written communications skills
Strong proficiency with Word document formatting
Familiarity with AP style guide as well as ability to be flexible with client style guides
Ability to write and/or edit under pressure to meet deadlines
Possess knowledge of the principles for developing and improving written information to be understood by varying audiences
Works well with collaborative team
