POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, under the direct supervision of the OTR/L, assists with the occupational therapy, evaluation, and treatment of psychiatric patients ranging in age from adolescence to geriatrics and must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of human growth and development. The COTA will also assist with daily responsibilities of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains proper, accurate, and timely records of treatment, progress, and discharge summaries.
Plans and directs groups in the patient milieu as directed by Supervisor.
Communicates with medical staff and other disciplines, as appropriate.
Assists with the assessment of the quality and appropriateness of care in accordance with the hospital Performance Improvement plan.
Assists in gathering data to be used in assessments, under the direction of OTR/L.
Expands qualifications by participating in advancement through own professional development organization, educational opportunities offered by the hospital, or instruction for other educational programs.
Regularly attends and participates in team and/or departmental meetings and activities.
Keeps others in the department informed of relevant information regarding patient care and safety.
Establishes and maintains effective working relations, boundaries, and organizational skills.
Welcomes patients/customers/employees in a warm, friendly manner.
Actively listens and constructively responds to questions and concerns in a timely manner.
Ensures that the dignity of the patient/customer/employee is always maintained.
Abides by and upholds the hospital’s service excellence standards.
Demonstrates safe and effective use of equipment.
Must be able to work weekends a month and be part of a holiday rotation schedule.

Must be able to run 3-4 groups daily and grade groups as needed to accommodate client’s needs.
Effective and timely documentation of group notes, 1:1 treatment note, and progress notes.
Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Assisting in training new staff and mentoring students.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Knowledge and familiarity with standardized test assessments.
Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served across the life span.
Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development across the life span.
Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to age and culturally specific needs.
Effective communication and educator skills.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

Education: Graduate of accredited Certified Occupational Therapy Program; Associates degree or higher.
Experience: Minimum of psychosocial clinical fieldwork experience or 1 year experience preferred in a behavioral health or similar setting.
Certification/Licensure: Massachusetts Certified Occupational Therapy license with current registration and certification; Must be certified in CPR.
Other: Immunization records must be up to date.
