Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
At Houston Methodist, the Animal Care Technician is responsible for delivering exceptional animal care to the research animals. This includes performing daily animal care and husbandry of laboratory animals in a research environment. The Animal Care Technician is also being responsible for assisting with animal technical procedures and providing entry level animal study support with supervision.
 

Requirements:

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Job responsibilities labeled EF capture those duties that are essential functions of the job.

PEOPLE - 20%

Establishes working relationships with all Houston Methodist Hospital staff. (EF)
Works with veterinary staff to report any animal concerning behavior by animals. (EF)

SERVICE - 30%

Provides daily animal husbandry and care for a variety of laboratory animal species. (EF)
Provides fresh food and water, performs cage changes and animal/procedure sanitation procedures. (EF)
Performs animal receiving and housing. (EF)
Performs sanitization of caging and equipment using tunnel and rack washers, bulk autoclaves, and other manual equipment as needed. (EF)

QUALITY/SAFETY - 20%

Ensures that animal room records are maintained in conformance with institutional policies and regulatory agency directives. (EF)
Works with Comparative Medicine animal care staff to ensure the facility is prepared for inspections and meets safety standards. (EF)
Performs technical procedures with Veterinary staff supervision, including but not limited to animal identification procedures, post-operative monitoring, health monitoring and weaning. (EF)

FINANCE - 10%

Identifies cost saving initiatives within the department and communicates recommendations. (EF)
Serves as the alternate for maintaining accurate inventories of supplies and equipment as indicated. (EF)

GROWTH/INNOVATION - 20%

Generates and communicates new ideas and suggestions that improve quality or service.
Learns, reviews, suggests improvements, refine, and formalize a variety of animal care procedures and facility support practices. (EF)
