Responsibilities
Provides clinical and technical support services to the providers, professional nursing staff and front office team in the Physician Practice environment in order to assist in the provision of patient care, improve efficiency and optimize clinical outcomes. As a member of the Orthopedic Team, the Specialist delivers patient care and assumes appropriate responsibilities concerning non-surgical procedures. The Specialist assists the Orthopedic Surgeon with clinical patient care including: casting, scheduling of surgical and diagnostic procedures, managing patient care during clinic hours (including patient flow through the exam and X-ray rooms), answering patient inquiries, and fielding messages and requests directed to the surgeon. In addition, the Specialist is frequently called upon to triage patient phone calls regarding symptoms, urgency of their injury/illness, and immediate care to manage pain/injuries prior to coming in for an appointment. This position serves as an integral part of the team within the physician practice and orthopedic service line. The specialist will need to have basic knowledge of durable medical equipment, as well as be willing to perform clinical, clerical and technical duties as necessary to provide excellent patient care and services. The position may require the employee to float to Urgent Care or other services lines when necessary to meet the needs of the organization.
Qualifications
Minimum Education: 2 years Medical Assistant or LPN experience working directly with an orthopedic surgeon and be a Registered Orthopedic Technologist/Technician.
Minimum Experience: At least 2 years in an Orthopedic practice with casting experience.
Required Certification/Licenses: Orthopedic Technologist certification through American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP) is required, CMA preferred, NAOT preferred but not required.
Physicial Demands: Work requires considerable variety of fairly steady active physical exertion with some and/or continuous standing or walking; occasional bending, twisting, kneeling, stooping, and reaching. Occasional lifting and carrying objects/equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Work requires moderate speed and accuracy, telephone etiquette, excellent keyboarding skills for scheduling and electronic medical records.
Working Conditions: Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. May be exposed to unpleasant patient elements; subjected to varying and unpredictable situations and occasionally to irregular work hours.
