With us, you’ll experience Impact . The Architect role sits within Financial Services which is headed up by Eloise Wall. Our purpose is to offer home finance and other financial services to those using realestate.com.au for their property search. Given the opportunity of the size of that audience, the FS vision is to integrate a consumer’s property search with finance though a world class digital seamless process. This will be achieved by building innovative consumer search and property finance application experiences that integrate the mortgage distribution channels of digital, phone and face to face.

What the role is all about:

As an Architect you will be responsible for the architecture and design of our most critical systems. Your scope of responsibility spans multiple business units and you’re solving big problems for all of REA. In collaboration with other technical leaders across the business you will lead the development of the technical vision for REA and apply it to the sites and products in your area. You will combine your extensive technical experience with your understanding of the business to guide your teams through all aspects of software delivery.

While the focus of this role is on architecture and leadership, you will remain connected to your teams and work with them to develop software solutions using agile software development practices as required. You will champion our technical practices to ensure a high-quality outcome for our business. You will share responsibility for the provisioning, deployment and operational support of the software your team builds.

You will contribute positively to REA’s culture by building engagement and morale, be involved in recruiting, set structure and processes and generally help build and maintain high performing teams. You will use your skills and experience to mentor junior, mid-level and senior team members.

Architects support their team in the following ways:

Contributing to the architecture practice

Contributing to the overall technical direction for REA in collaboration with other senior technical leaders

Leading the development of your business unit’s technology strategy in alignment with the REA technical direction

Driving significant components of the global architectural and technology strategy for REA

Working with product stakeholders to meet architectural goals through delivery roadmaps

Designing high quality and simple solutions that meet the needs of our users and the business

Leading the implementation and decommissioning of architecturally complex projects of global significance end-to-end, including, front-end, native mobile, APIs, data and delivery engineering tech

Leading the technology strategy for key integration projects within your business unit

Contributing to the REA knowledge base through blog posts, brown-bags sessions and coaching less experienced members of the team

Actively representing the REA technology team in public forums such as conferences, community groups and our technical blog

What we’re looking for

Expert skills in design of high-performance dynamic web based products and services, that scale to hundreds of millions of users.

Expert skills in configuration management, infrastructure automation and tooling.

Expert skills in modern software delivery - CI/CD, artefact management, deployments and testing.

Expert skills in core web development technologies – React, JavaScript, proper CSS and HTML.

Expert skills in modern web applications frameworks and libraries such as GraphQL, ElasticSearch and event sourcing.

Advanced skills in cloud computing, preferably AWS.

Advanced skills in developing long-term system architecture strategies.

Networking, TCP/IP, DNS, BGP, CDNs and routing.

Able to communicate and collaborate effectively with business stakeholders.

Security knowledge and mindset.

Someone with a few runs on the board – you will likely have 10+ years of experience working in software development and 5+ years leading large engineering teams

Comfortable working in ambiguous and challenging problem spaces

Tertiary qualification in Computer Science or similar highly desirable

Looks at tricky situations through a solutions-focused lens

Values consistency, can successfully balance leverage and autonomy and has a strong passion for decommissioning legacy

Can successfully engage with the business to champion the ROI of great engineering solutions
