This position is part of the Global Glass and Materials Science Discipline within Global Technology. This team is responsible for research, development, engineering practices, and global operations at O-I. This position will bring fundamental scientific knowledge about glass processing to advance O-I’s competitive position in the packaging industry. This person will be seen as a technical expert to projects that provide a step-change in glass container weight and manufacturing. Additionally, this position is responsible for identifying new research, technologies, or processes which give O-I a competitive advantage in the packaging industry.
Position Requirements:
The Sr. Glass Scientist should have:
PhD in glass science, ceramic engineering, or materials science
10+ years’ full-time work experience in glass or ceramics
Fundamental understanding of glass chemistry and structure-property relationships.
Experience in high volume materials manufacturing preferred
Foreign language proficiency is a plus
A role-up-the-sleeves mentality to execute projects in the lab, pilot plant, or production facility
Experience in scaling-up and deploying new technologies
You will:
Utilize deep expertise in topics such as glass structure and properties, strengthening, brittle failure, surface modification, mechanics of materials, and glass testing/statistics.
Use fundamental knowledge about glass processing and structure/property relationships to guide the business decisions. Make go / no-go recommendations to the business based on technical findings.
Formulate and execute project concepts of considerable scope. Plan experiments to yield quality data that guides decisions on project path. Has prime technical responsibility for significant phases of leading-edge projects. Use literature searches to augment experimental data.
Mentor and coach junior technical staff in glass science.
Coordinate or lead other technical personnel in team efforts.
Communicate effectively in reports and presentations intended for upper management and external audiences
Build and maintain relationships with operational experts around the world in many different cultures.
