Job Description

AK Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer Energy/Utilities at our Middletown, Ohio facility. The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the energy department equipment located across the entire Middletown Works facility. This equipment includes various pumps, motors, and turbines on the various water handling systems, clarifiers, cooling towers, air compressors, water treatment, boilers, and associated piping and equipment. This includes assisting operating departments with coordinating isolation of utilities feeds and coordinating repair efforts for plant wide water, gas, and air as well as coordination of dig permits. Oversee the maintenance activities and equipment repairs for the plant utilities.

Primary Responsibilities:

* Provide technical engineering expertise for the determination of the basic causes of equipment failures; the development and implementation of corrective actions; and, for the establishment of appropriate maintenance procedures in order to improve equipment stability.
* Utilize appropriate failure analysis techniques to determine root causes of equipment failures and initiates necessary corrective action to eliminate/reduce such failures.
* Assist in the planning of equipment outages; down turn repairs; and the establishment of maintenance shops; priorities to ensure timely, efficient repair/replacement of equipment. Assist in the establishments and assignment of preventive maintenance procedures for the proper care of equipment.
* Work closely with Plant Engineering to ensure that drawings are updated in keeping with equipment modifications; to provide counsel for equipment redesign; and, to secure information necessary for the performance of the position.
* Coordinate the establishment of requirements, standards, and procedures for the equipment inspection; work closely with departmental inspectors and with the non-destructive testing group for the proper, timely inspection testing of equipment as part of the overall effort to prevent for departmental spares ensuring inventory control; the maintenance and repair of such spares and the establishment of procedures to control spares and the establishment of procedures to control spare costs.
* The incumbent faces the challenge of providing and exercising the skills necessary to determine the basic causes of equipment failures in assigned area of responsibility and to define and initiate appropriate corrective actions to prevent the repetition of such failures. Additionally, the incumbent must utilize those skills for the development and implementation of proper inspection, testing, and maintenance practices and procedures for the proper care of equipment or the detection of potential problems. Doing this within the constraints of the budget and in a timely matter.
* Provide direction required to solve problems in a quality manner, that insures improvements to the system. Once the directions are established, then provide the necessary services to implement the changes or project. This can include selecting equipment, contractors, suppliers, engineering and etc. Then follow the project until it is installed and operational.

Qualifications:

* A degree Engineering is required. A Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred.
* Relevant experience is preferred.
* Basic knowledge of electrical, mechanical, piping, steam production and distribution, pumps and turbines, compressed air, and cooling towers.
* The ability to read and understand the different types of drawings associated with the above fields.
* Primary responsibility for maintaining 24/7 operations and high availability of equipment.
* Directly involved in troubleshooting and remediating operational/mechanical issues within the plant.
* Ensure necessary tests and equipment inspections are preformed as required.
