Job Description
If The Daily began a revolution in daily news podcasts, how should NYT Audio approach the next wing of programming? By working with desks such as Food and Culture, Sports and Obits, you will be part of a growing team of Times Audio producers answering that question.
We are looking for passionate audio storytellers well versed in the world of NYT audio to help craft the stories that push our ambitions forward. You are highly organized, self-directed and enterprising, and able to think through complex ideas that translate into immersive, must-listen audio stories. You have a strong work ethic, are detail-oriented, approach challenges with curiosity, and thrive in a highly collaborative, deadline-driven environment.
You will be working across a portfolio of programming, focused on coordinating and executing all aspects of production across both new and established shows. With support from an editor and brainstorming companionship from your fellow producers, you will be responsible for working directly with Times journalists, pitching ideas, scripting, editing, identifying and pulling the best tape and assembling and scoring episodes in Pro-Tools.
Responsibilities:
* Produce full pieces of audio stories from start to finish, including research, booking, recording in the field and/or studio, cutting tape and mixing audio.
* Assisting with directing hosts and guests in the studio and remote locations.
* Work with editorial figures from both the audio team and New York Times desks.
* Manage an editorial calendar, juggling immediate priorities and longer-term ambitions.
* Collaborate with the audience development director and New York Times desks to dream up creative ways to reach a new audience via social media and other channels.
* Upload episodes on and off The New York Times platforms.
Skills:
* 3-5 years experience in audio production.
* Fluency in audio editing, ideally using Pro Tools.
* A passion for narrative storytelling
* Experience in building complex long-form narratives in audio.
* Comfortable directing and cutting two-ways.
* Ability to think creatively about how to make smart audio shows that will get listeners hooked.
* Ability to quickly problem solve in structure & tape
* Willingness and ability to use data to inform decisions.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Well-developed and adaptive cultural competence and emotional intelligence.
* Experience in a deadline-driven environment.
* Proven understanding of music scoring and sound design techniques and strategies
* Eagerness to create the best work possible.

New York, New York
The New York Times (sometimes abbreviated as the NYT and NYTimes) is an American newspaper based in New York City with worldwide influence and readership. Founded in 1851, the paper has won 127 Pulitzer Prizes, more than any other newspaper. The Times is ranked 17th in the world by circulation and 2nd in the U.S.
The paper is owned by The New York Times Company, which is publicly traded and is controlled by the Sulzberger family through a dual-class share structure. It has been owned by the family since 1896; A.G. Sulzberger, the paper's publisher, and his father, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., the company's chairman, are the fourth and fifth generation of the family to head the paper.
Nicknamed "The Gray Lady", the Times has long been regarded within the industry as a national "newspaper of record". The paper's motto, "All the News That's Fit to Print", appears in the upper left-hand corner of the front page.
Since the mid-1970s, The New York Times has greatly expanded its layout and organization, adding special weekly sections on various topics supplementing the regular news, editorials, sports, and features. Since 2008, the Times has been organized into the following sections: News, Editorials/Opinions-Columns/Op-Ed, New York (metropolitan), Business, Sports of The Times, Arts, Science, Styles, Home, Travel, and other features. On Sunday, the Times is supplemented by the Sunday Review (formerly the Week in Review), The New York Times Book Review, The New York Times Magazine and T: The New York Times Style Magazine. The Times stayed with the broadsheet full-page set-up and an eight-column format for several years after most papers switched to six, and was one of the last newspapers to adopt color photography, especially on the front page.
